​Under the direction of the Fire Officers, a Volunteer Firefighter serves the residents of Minto by responding to a wide variety of situations, ranging from emergencies that immediately threaten life or property to routine citizen requests for information or assistance. They perform within the scope of the policies and procedures of The Town of Minto and they perform duties in the following general categories: fire suppression, emergency medical aid or rescue, hazardous material responses, training, building inspections and public education.

​Becoming a volunteer firefighter takes commitment to training, responding to emergencies, and supporting your community — but it also offers the chance to gain valuable skills, be part of a strong team, and make a real difference.
Eligibility

Must be 18 years of age or older

Must live in close proximity to the firehall

Must have a valid G driver's license
-
Valid High School Diploma (or equivalent)

Do not possess a criminal record
Requirements
-
Must attend Recruit Training 2 weekends per month from January to July. Firefighters must then write their NFPA 1001 Firefighter I & II exams.

Obtain an Ontario DZ driver's license within one year of being hired.

Attend Practice 2 evenings per month.

Harriston - Every 2nd and 4th Tuesday

Clifford - Every 2nd and 4th Wednesday​

Palmerston - Every 2nd and 4th Thursday

Complete truck checks monthly.
General Duties
Volunteer firefighters are compensated for attending training, emergencies, and station duties.

Carry a pager and respond to calls for rescue and fire emergencies which may include working within hazardous environments when fighting fires, taking part in several rescue scenarios, and administering medical aid.

Participate in regular training and maintenance work of the fire station and equipment.

Work within a chain of command management structure, making decisions as well as to adhering to orders and direction.

Participate in public education opportunities and support local community events.
